Be A Pen Pal

Letter writing may seem like a thing of the past, but I guarantee your students’ eyes will light up if they get a letter from you!  This may seem silly since you see them each week, but letter writing is a great way to build relationships, practice writing skills, and just have some fun.

Students from second grade on up are often tested on the correct form of a friendly letter.  Students are also asked to write persuasive letters in the upper elementary grades.  Being “pen pals” with a student you tutor can be fun, informative and educational all at once.

Try writing a letter over the holiday break.  Tell about what you did over the break or how you spent the holidays when you were the student’s age.  No stamp or address is needed, just hand the letter to your student on your first day back.  See if you can get your student to write back.  Keep this up throughout the year and just see how the writing improves.  There is no need to correct or instruct, just be a good model.  Let me know how this works.

Have a great break, and enjoy the holidays!
