Working With Initial Blends

First graders sometimes struggle when consonant blends are introduced. Oakland member Bob Burt has come up with a simple but effective method for practicing these blends. I am including his instructions, some lists of blends and word endings, and pictures of the flash cards. Thank you Bob for sharing!

1. Put one initial blend at the right side of a 3×5 card (horizontal).
2. Put several endings side by side across another 3×5 card (also horizontal).
3. Place the second card behind the first card.
4. Gradually expose each ending by sliding the card to the left while hidng the previously exposed endings with your thumb to focus on each word created.
